Potemkin is a man who always strives to do better, to do more. He was the first in his family to go to university, studying anthropology at Durham. However, he was expelld under accusations of using an illicit relationship with tutor Luther Hawthorne to gain an unfair advantage.

After being expelled, he spent most of the 80s as a freelance archaeologist, styling himself as some kind of Indiana Jones type hero, although even then he found the lure of wealth too strong to resist. More than once in this time, he sacrificed his principles in favour of making a little more money.

During this time, he happened to be present during the incident at Lobos Creek, where he met his wife Cassandra Korrodo-Smythe. Havingmarried into money, he found it possible to settle down somewhat, and invest in less risky (although not always entirely legal) entrapreneurial schemes.
